Institution Research 1
I have to research what TV channel would be appropriate for my documentary that I am going to make.
Their are two types of production companies which are independent and mainstream. An example of an independent production company are Flame Television and for the mainstream production company is Channel 4.
Flame television is one of the UK’s leading independent television production companies, specialising in devising popular formats and factual programmes. They have some successful series that are now on BBC 1 and they are 'Heir Hunters' and 'You've Been Scammed'. They was formed in 1999 and has established an enviable reputation for producing innovative and compelling television and they provide original programming for the big TV companies like BBC, ITV and Channel 4.
Channel 4 is a British public-service television broadcaster which began transmission on 2 November 1982. Channel 4 have had a lot of success with some of the documentaries that they have put on to the TV like 'An Immigrant’s Guide, UKIP: The First Hundred Days' and 'Educating Yorkshire/The East End' but their has been some controversial documentaries like 'Benefits Street' which showed the bad side of Britain.
Some of the rules and regulations of Channel 4 is that:
Channel 4 would put stronger content like sexual content and violence at 9pm so, that audience would know when it would be on. This is also the same on BBC1 and ITV1.
They do this so that the viewer would know what to expect from the show and if they do not like it, then they can turn it off.
Channel 4's mission statement is to prove that a channel with no public funding can keep its public service values to the fore while remaining commercially competitive. The Channel wants to have commercial success so that they can fund projects of ambition and risk so that they can support the range and diversity of its suppliers.
I believe that Channel 4 would be the most appropriate channel to broadcast my kind of documentary that I am going to make because Channel 4 are known for have very controversial documentaries like 'Benefits Street' and my idea for my documentary is going to be about what school is really like and this could show the good but also the bad side of school and that it would be on at the perfect time as, I would like this to be played at 9pm when the younger generation would not be watching.
Summary
From doing some of the research about Channel 4 and there documentaries, I would like to include in my documentary that I am going to make. I would like to do an 'fly on the wall' documentary like 'Educating Cardiff' and I would like to take some ideas from them and use it for mine.

White Dee from 'Benefits Street'

Some of the rules and regulations of Channel 4 is that:
- - Children should be protected from unsuitable material by appropriate scheduling,
- - The watershed is 9pm. Nothing unsuitable for children should, in general, be shown before 9pm or after 5:30am,
- - There should be a gradual transition to more adult material from the watershed, not an abrupt change
- - Broadcasters should clearly 'flap-up' or warn audiences when programmers before the watershed contain material that might distress some children (for example, killing of animals or surgical procedures)
Appropriate for scheduling rule for when they would broadcast programmes.
- The age range and also the number of the children that would be watching, would be taken into account of what happens at school. For example, the summer holidays they would put shows that would contain violence or sexual content would be put on later at 11pm so that the children would not watch it
- What the progamme may be about. For example, is it was an documentary about drugs deals within London and would have to put it on at an certain time.
They do this so that the viewer would know what to expect from the show and if they do not like it, then they can turn it off.
