Demographic Questionnaire

Demographic Questionnaire

With this questionnaire that me and Steven created on SurveyMonkey. We aim to find out and identify are target audience that we would want to watch our documentary and the ancillary tasks that we have to do as well. We also want to find out what they would want within our documentary which would want to make them watch it.

Me and Steven have based the questions off of the demographic that they are, some of the media theories such as 'Uses and Gratification Theory' and Rick Altman's theory on 'Pleasures'. we also want to find out from doing this is, what they would want to see an school documentary such as, interviews and what camera shots they believe would be best.

Link to our SurveyMonkey questionnaire: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/QGJNDWB

Summary
From doing this questionnaire with Steven, we can see what types of people do our questionnaire and what the think about the documentaries that they watch and what demographic that the person answering the questionnaire is in. Therefore, we can work out who we are targeting the documentary to so we can making the media text meet their needs.

With the results that we will get back, we will decide what we should from what the audience want, turn it into some graphs so that we can see what people would want to have on our documentary and from that we can see who we should target are documentary as well.

Audience Research

Audience Research

I will be looking at the audience that I would be targeting for my documentary with Steven. We will be trying to look at the audience that Channel 4 targeted from their documentary 'Educating Yorkshire' because we are trying to copy their sort of style. I will be finding which demographic I think that make up my genre of documentary and this would be the demographic that I would want to focus on.

Demographic profiling
Demographic profiling is he most basic form of identify a target audience. They use this by grouping the the audience into; age, class, gender, geographical, area, economic status and religion.

From looking at the Channel 4 documentary 'Educating Yorkshire', I can see that they are targeting the demographic of 'C1C2D'. I believe that they are trying to target the lower middle class to the working class because they can relate to it as they may have an son or daughter that goes to school and they would want to see what it is really like inside the schools in Britain. They may also want to look at these sort of Channel 4 documentaries because they would want to see how far the education has changed within school from when they was there and compare it to the time when they was there.

However, the upper middle class and middle class (A/B) may want to watch these sort of show because they would want to see some entertainment from it as they would only see this as an joke instead of being an serious thing and the teachers are trying their hardest to get the children that go to the school grades and the upper/middle class are just laughing at how stupid the children may be even though the teachers are trying to help them. They may also want to see this because they would want to see how the other people lived (C1C2D), so they can compare their lifestyle to the working class people because they may have been curious about how they live.

The upper/middle class people may also want to learn and get some information about what public schools are like which is the users and gratifications theory. They would want to get some information about it because they may just wonder how public schools work and compare it to the private schools which they probably went to and see how they are different.

The LifeMatrix segments
The lifematrix segments defines wide range of different types of audience groups which links to the different types of demographics. Some of the lifematroix are;

  • Renaissance Women: Active, caring, affluent, influential mums
  • Fun/Atics: Aspirational, fun-seeking, active young people
  • Home Soldiers: Home-centric, family-oriented, materially ambitious
  • Free Birds: Vital, active altruistic seniors

Summary
From doing the research about the demographic, I now know that I will be targeting 'C1C2D' because they are the working class and would want to watch because they can relate to it as, they may have a son or daughter that goes to school and they would want to see what schools are like. The lifematrix that I believe that I will be targeting with the documentary would be the 'Renaissance Women' because we want to target parents so, they can see what goes on in school.

Planning the Mock up Scene from a Documentary

Planning the Mock Up Scene

I have decided with Steven that we are going to recreate a scene from the Channel 4 documentary 'Educating Yorkshire'. We wanted to do this to test our self and so we can also see the sort of style that we can do and how close we can get to the actual clip.

We have made an film schedule so that we would know what we have to do and when we have to do it. This is what we have wrote down on our film schedule;
  • We will film during our media lesson on Friday 6th November (10:45 - 12:25) but if we need to we will attend an after college session to get this work done.
  • We may also stay behind after college so that we can edit the clip
  • We have looked at three different teachers and their classes that we are trying to get for this project
  • We takes the shots about 3 times so that we can decide what one would look better and we can put into our vision of the mini clip from 'Educating Yorkshire'
  • We need to ask the permission from the teachers if they would allow us to film them and their class during a time that we can
These are the shots that I would want to recreate with Steven with the dialogue along the side to show what scene there will be dialogue in and what they will be saying. I will also show when the soundtrack starts and the stage directions as well.

Shot 1

(Soundtrack begins)

Shot 2

"Who feels that paper can be their friend?"

(Teacher looks towards class)

Shot 3

(Students stand up and put their hand in the air)

Shot 4
"Today you've just been getting to know her, alright"

"By June you'll be taking her out to dinner"

(Teacher smiles and continues address the class)

From planning this Mock  up scene, I would be able to know what I would have to do when I make the actual documentary and this would make it a lot easier for me and Steven. From actually filming this and trying to copy a 12 second scene from 'Educating Yorkshire' we will learn the kind of style that we are aiming to put into our main practical task. Me and Steven will make a script for the teacher that will be doing it for us with the lines that they will have to say and the stage directions that they will have to do during the scene.

Codes and Conventions of an Newspaper Advert

Codes and Conventions of an Newspaper Advert

I will now be looking at the magazine advert that will be what Steven will be doing for the practical but I am going to analyse one so that I can also know what they normally have on an magazine advert and help Steven if he needs it.

The demographic that they will be targeting would be for the adults that are 20 + because it is an very depressing TV documentary and it would be very hard to control their emotions when you would be watching it. Channel 4 documentaries like this are normally played around 9 pm because all the children would of gone to sleep and they would not be able to watch it.

The colour scheme that they have on the magazine advert for the documentary is very plain but bold because it is an very depressing subject and they would want to reflect this in the advert so that the audience would get the feeling by the name and colour scheme of the advert that it is very depressing.

The main image that they have on the advert would be the first thing that the viewer would see because it is an child fall into the ground with everyone around him not caring by what is happening to him. This would make the audience get an emotional response just from looking at this and may make them want to watch it. The main image of the child disappearing into the pavement is their to also show that he has been forgotten about in society.

There are mainly two main colours that are on this newspaper advert and they are Black and White. This would give an idea to the viewers what it is going to be like (depressing) and from that and the image they would decided if they are going to watch it or not. Having the colours as Black and White and then the young child wearing red is an binary opposite showing good/bad. The Black and White colours are really conventional on a newspaper advert. The red jumper of the child who is disappearing in the crack of the pavement stands out more, to show that he is being forgotten about by society and shows the painful truth.

Summary
I would look at these ideas from this Channel 4 documentary advert and tell Steven what they have on it to help him get an better understanding of what he would have to include. From looking at this newspaper advert, I am going to share with Steven what I believe that I think we would need on an newspaper advert to make it stand out and what is conventional for an newspaper advert.

From this, me and Steven are going to share what we have both found out about the double page spread and the magazine advert so that, we can both get a better understanding about what we would have to do when making our ancillary tasks.
